The Stage Before AGI
Before artificial general intelligence (AGI) arrives, the world will experience the rise of powerful goal-directed systems. I call this stage Operative Artificial Intelligence (OAI). OAI emphasizes action over understanding and shows a stage where societal functions rely on distributed intelligence.
As I see it, AGI represents one possible milestone among many potential endpoints. OAI provides a glimpse into a near future where intelligence operates through action at scale.
